Arriving at Vancouver Island in the northwest Pacific is a major part of the fascination of this fascinating Pacific island. Extend your vacation by including your arrival as a major part of your plans.
‘The best part of the holiday is planning, but the most exciting thing is getting there.’
So says my great-grandmother who also inspired me to explore the Pacific Northwest at first, and in terms of visiting Vancouver Island, she is absolutely right.
Being a large island, close to the mainland, a one-hour and forty-minute cruise is like a small boat, crossing the Gulf Islands, the length of the camera from Orca Whales, the Dolphins and the occasional eagle looking for a fish lunch. Not only that but after arriving in Saanich, Island, it is about 30 minutes from the city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.
Take a magnificent ferry from the British Columbia for two points, either from Seattle in the Pacific northwest of the US, or take a Washington ferry to Sidney, whichever is fine, as you make your way to the San Juan or Gulf islands. For speed, try the Victoria Clipper catamaran from Seattle.
If that doesn’t work for you, why not try getting to Vancouver Island by sea?
These float planes have daily schedules from a variety of destinations, including Vancouver and Seattle and much of the land in the port city of Victoria City. Yes, believe it or not, every year more than 300,000 passengers to the island arrive by plane floating, most of them entering Victoria Harbor. Not really in the harbor but access to water in the harbor and direct access to the city of Victoria, in front of the parliament buildings. You can’t do that in most big cities!
Okay, I’m still sure, so what about getting on a whale watching boat and an Eco-tour speed boat?
You can do that from downtown Vancouver, where it leaves at 8 a.m. and take you on an Eco tour to the pre-arrival islands of Victoria on Vancouver Island. You can also link to a bus tour from here, and they will take you back to your hotel in Vancouver in the evening
on a speed boat, if you so desire.
You see, getting to Vancouver Island is a big part of the attraction so make it part of your travel plans. Whether you’re sailing, cycling, cycling, car or bus boat, using a floating plane or whale watching instant, you get the added bonus of beautiful scenery, pristine wilderness, beach life and high-quality tourist attractions even before you arrive. Getting there is more than half fun!
You can always fly to Victoria Airport, but it’s fun somewhere, as my aunt used to say. He actually said many things, but this time he was right.
